The artist donates twenty-five thousand pounds Mercury Prize to small live spaces

Sam Fender has donated the entirety of his £25k honor winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the Britain's grassroots music venues.

The star was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the best record of the previous year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money supported spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties arising from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues received monetary aid in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The notion that money from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

Fender is among several artists to donate his award winnings to good deeds.

When Pulp earned the prize in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the band would give their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty among multiple organizations, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," she shared with outlets.

Two years ago, the band donated their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their act, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "stakes" in the properties.
