Prime Television Selections: 7 Essential Movies In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's daring commentary tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the dreaded aspects of ageing. Demi Moore delivers an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into hosting a fitness program on TV. Pushed out by her deceitful superior Harvey, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome process called the Substance. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit mystery stars the talented actress as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a break from covering world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich guests. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills through this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor embraces his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, his unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has rendered the children anxious. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast take part the intelligent intelligence fun.
